Youth Trainings

Since the Commission’s inception in 1988, we have committed ourselves to empowering and guiding Broward County youth. Through a multitude of youth initiatives, events, alternative activities, and trainings over the years, the Commission fosters leadership skills and encourages youth to be healthy and drug-free.

Goals

  • Offer youth trainings about advocacy to advance social change.
  • Teach youth to be peer-to-peer educators.
  • Educate youth about the interrelated effects of substance use/abuse.

Overview
The Youth Leadership Training Institute is a FREE 3-day/2-night initiative of the United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse. It has been in existence for over 20 years. The Institute helps bring together youth leaders from within Broward County with their adult allies to create positive social change as it relates to underage drinking, substance use/abuse, & other interrelated issues.

History
The United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse created the Youth Leadership Training Institute in 1991 and has conducted the 3-day, 2 night training institute every year since. Institutes are planned and led by youth leaders who have attended at least one Institute. With the help of Adult and Youth Leaders and Commission Staff, the youth plan, implement, and support the Institute.
