Partnership for a Healthy & Drug Free Broward
United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse oversees, administers and manages a three-year $5.2 million Department of Children & Families contract for innovative substance abuse prevention programming and environmental strategies. With support of the community and local partners, the United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse is the first in the state of Florida to receive this type of contract, strictly to be used for substance abuse prevention programs. The 12 partners that will provide substance abuse prevention services through the contact include the following:
- Archways, Inc. - Too Good for Drugs (TGFD) is a school-based prevention program designed to reduce the intention to use alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs in middle and high school students. This program serves approximately 400 students. Get Real About Violence (GRAV) is a K-12, research-based prevention program that addresses a wide range of violent behavior in students - from bullying and verbal aggression at early grades through fighting and social exclusion at middle grades to relationship abuse and assaults that can occur in later grades. GRAV places emphasis on enlisting the support of bystanders, changing violent norms, teaching social skills, and building communication and partnerships between adults and youth to stop violence. This program serves about 400 students. Parent to Parent creates the perfect setting for parents to open up and share with other parents. The program addresses communication skills to build family bonding and addresses risk factors such as availability of drugs, friends anti-social behaviors, and attitudes favorable towards drugs. It encourages parents to network, create a community of parents and encourage their children to become active in the community while decreasing the risk of underage drinking, marijuana use, and Rx drug abuse. This program serves approximately 100 people. 24/7 Dad is a fatherhood initiative that teaches Dads the importance of being involved in their children's lives via communication skill, values, dealing with discipline/consequences effectively, child development and self esteem awareness. This program serves approximately 55 Dads.
- ASPIRA of Florida - Too Good for Drugs (TGFD) is a school-based prevention program designed to reduce the intention to use tobacco, and illegal drugs in middle and high school students. This program serves approximately 540 students.
- Broward County Elderly & Veterans Services Division - BCES is a program for Elderly persons dealing with substance abuse. This program serves approximately 75 adults.
- Broward House - SISTA is a CDC social skill-building intervention designed for African American woman. The intervention consists of five two-hour sessions that are delivered by trained peer facilitators in a community-based setting. The sessions are gender-relevant and culturally sensitive. This Broward House SISTA Intervention targets heterosexual high-risk HIV-negative African American women. This programs serves approximately 60 women.
- Broward County Public Schools - Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) is an effective, program-focused, direction oriented, and practical approach to the "treatment" of the following risk factors for substance abuse: conduct problems, association with antisocial peers, early drug use, and problematic family relations. BSFT successfully reduces problems in Hispanic children and adolescents and strengthens their families. This program serves approximately 50 students.
- DFYIT, Inc. - All DFYIT club members are required to: Sign a contract with the DFYIT organization proclaiming their drug-free status; Voluntarily submit to an initial drug test upon contract signing and random screenings throughout each program year; Make a commitment to perform 10 hours of community service and Participate in a minimum of 10 anti-drug and tobacco awareness activities. This program serves about 500 students.
- Hanley Center - Active Parenting Now is a video-based education program targeted to parents of 1-12 year old children who want to improve their parenting skills. It is based on the application of Adlerian parenting theory, which is defined by mutual respect among family members within a democratically run family. This program serves approximately 90 parents. The ATHENA (Athletes Targeting Exercise & Nutrition Alternatives) program uses a school-based, team-centered format that aims to reduce disordered eating habits and deter the use of body-shaping substances among middle and high school female athletes. This program serves approximately 550 females. ATLAS (Athletes Training and Learning to Avoid Steroids) is a multi-component universal program for male high school athletes, designed to reduce risk factors for use of anabolic steroids and other drugs while providing healthy sports nutrition and strength-training alternatives to illicit the use of athletic-enhancing substances. This program serves approximately 550 males.
- Memorial Healthcare System - Families That Care - Guiding Good Choices (GGC) is a multimedia program that gives parents of children in grades four through eight (8-13 years old) the knowledge and skills needed to guide their children through early adolescents. This program serves approximately 200 students. Too Good for Drugs (TGFD) is a school-based prevention program designed to reduce the intention to use alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs in middle and high school students. This program serves approximately 1030 students. Life Skills Training (LST) is a classroom-based substance abuse prevention program for grade and middle children. LST teaches personal skills and social skills to promote individual competence and aims to decrease young people's vulnerability to pro-substance use and the social influences from peers and the media. This program serves approximately 200 students.
- Minority Development and Empowerment, Inc. - Families That Care - Guiding Good Choices (GGS) is a multimedia program that gives parents of children in grades four through eight (8-13 years old) the knowledge and skills needed to guide their children through early adolescents. This program serves about 5500 people.
- New Direction Institute - Families That Care - Guiding Good Choices (GGC) is a multimedia program that gives parents of children in grades four through eight (8-13 years old) the knowledge and skills needed to guide their children through early adolescence. This program serves approximately 150 students.
- Urban League of Broward County - Life Skills Training (LST) is a classroom-based substance abuse prevention program for grand and middle school children. LST teaches personal skills and social skills to promote individual competence and aims to decrease people's vulnerability to pro-substance use and social influences from peers and the media. This program serves approximately 220 students.
- Pace Center for Girls - Getting to the Heart of the Matter is a 12-week, gender specific innovative pilot program for girls age 11-18. This program serves approximately 40 girls.
